Eccleston Village

Where Is Eccleston?

In the North of England...

...to the South of Chester...

...lies the village of Eccleston...

...in green and pleasant surrounds.

The Surrounding Area

Eccleston is surrounded by the beautiful Cheshire countryside. The A55 and Chester is to the North and the River Dee is to the East. The Eaton Estate is to the south of the village and the Welsh border is to the West. To see more photographs visit the Eccleston Village Photo Gallery.

The River Dee

Club-Tailed Dragonfly (Gomphus Vulgatissimus)

The club-tailed dragonfly occurs on the stretch of the River Dee between Shocklach and Aldford;and is the only known site for the species in Cheshire (discovered in 1985). This dragonfly is described as nationally scarce and populations are known to exist on the rivers Severn, Wye and Thames.

The club-tailed dragonfly is a medium-sized yellow/green and black dragonfly with a club-shaped tail flying May and June.

Broad-Leaved Ragwort (Senecio Fluviatilis)

The Broad-leaved Ragwort is a tall perennial herb, naturalised by lowland streams and rivers. It was introduced before 1600 and originally grown for medicinal use. The somewhat clustered distribution of records suggest independent spread from several different sites; it is now grown in gardens, so many recent records are probably garden escapes. It has persisted in many places, especially in the north e.g. by the River Dee at Holt. This species has a Eurosiberian Temperate distribution; it is naturalised in N.W. Europe beyond its native range.

The flowers are obviously ragwort and it usually grows in damp or wet areas.
